I’ll be honest: I still don’t particularly like dogs, but there were times when reading this that I thought, “Damn, that’s a good dog.” Would this story have been better with a cat? That goes without saying, but Jack London has captured the world through a dog’s eyes in such a way that I can at least understand Buck.
The story has true character development. In a dog. Obviously this wouldn’t work well for a cat, because a cat would have no room left to grow. Also, a cat would have just killed every human characters in their sleep. Except John Thornton. He would have fed the cat and given him scratches under the chin only when requested.
So, all in all a good book. And considering that the main character is a dog, that is all the praise I’m willing to give. Sorry pup, no doggy treats from me.
