EDUPHOTO APP

An app designed to educate users, from young to old, on the basics of photography and walk them through different techniques, terminology, and settings that can improve the quality of their photos.

MY ROLE:

Lead UX Designer

RESPONSIBILITIES:

User research, wireframing, and prototyping

THE PROBLEM
Most photography apps are aimed at basics users who wish to apply basic edits or advanced users who do not need the app to hold their hands. There are few apps available that seek to educate users on the basics of good photography while walking them through exercises that allow them to apply these principles.

THE GOAL

Create an app that fills the gap in the market. The app should be simple to use, explain the basics of how a camera works, different framing techniques, and color theory. It should also integrate the phone’s camera to allow users to put into practice what they learn

USER RESEARCH

Conducted secondary research into the common problems users experience when attempting to take aesthetic photographs using their smartphone camera. This led to the discovery that many users feel that they don’t know what makes a good photograph but can identify a good photo when they see one.

In addition, my secondary research led me to find that 50% of children aged 5 to 14 years old own a smartphone. In fact, 25% of children aged 3-4 own a cell phone with a camera.

PAIN POINT 1

PAIN POINT 2

PAIN POINT 3

PAIN POINT 4

Users know a good photograph when they see it, but they can’t pinpoint what makes the photograph good.

Users don’t understand all the functions that modern smartphone cameras offer.

When users wish to learn more about how to take good photographs, they get bogged down in Youtube tutorials that go into far more detail than they require.

Users don’t understand the terminology used when discussing photography.

VALUE PROPOSITION

In-app functionality of the camera on the smartphone with a UI overlay that explains how to adjust the settings in order to achieve the looks described in each lesson.

Quizzes help solidify knowledge while review of material connected to incorrectly answered questions ensure that students are not falling behind as they progress through the lessons.

A “teacher mode” allows teachers to track students’ progress, view photos that students place into a selected folder, and give grades and comments accordingly.

Progressive lessons that build on one another, teaching the users of how a camera works, the settings, and how to best optimize their camera use to take amazing photos.

THREE TYPES OF EXPECTED USERS

People who have long lamented that they can’t take good pictures and want a fast, easy, simple way to learn the basics of photography while upgrading their skills.

Those with a newfound interest in photography who want to kickstart their learning journey in order to enter a photo contest or before signing up for more profession photography classes.

Teachers who wish to educate their students on the basics of photography while monitoring their learning progress.
